US/Australia FTA

The wonders of international trade never cease to amaze.

The FTA that's been on the table between Australia and the US for the last 5 years appears about to collapse as, from all reports in Australia indicate, the US refuses to budge on agricultural protection.

Strange that a free-marketeering country like the US is so keen to open markets in other countries, yet so hesitant to open its own. Oh, to the power of lobby groups and industry!

And, to top it all off, World Bank President James Wolfensohn came out today and commented that he didn't like bilateral trade agreements, as they fragmented the world's economy and reinforced structural inequalities (don't quote me on the exact words though).

Oh well, at least the US media is caught up in something meaningful - like Janet Jackson's breast.

Interesting update, I had not heard about the Australian/US negotiations.

Yes, it really seems like the US is more than anything keen on turning tables their way whatever situation. Remember the US steel tariffs? Well, after a few years they had to quit the tariffs due to international pressure, but now their steel lobby is outraged and will spend even more money on lobbying their government on the issue.

It will be an interesting development, especially regarding the Doha round. As we know, the Cancun negotiations broke down due to - of all things - disagreement on what to negotiate about. The rich countries wanted to discuss 'The Singapore Issues', meaning that the developing world open up their markets even more for global corporations with headquarters in New York, or Berlin, or whatever, while the developing countries wanted most of all that for instance the US open up Their agricultural markets.

Oh well.

Hmm ... steel tariffs. I seem to recall the US only backed down after the WTO the tariffs illegal and allowed the Eu and Japan to threaten with retatilatory tariffs on US products!
